Self-Care Tips: Maintaining Good Health and Preventing Disease

With so many guilty pleasures available in this day and age, it might seem like a real challenge to effectively take care of your health and do everything in your power to prevent disease. But, this is what self-care is about; once you start feeling the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, habits and routines, you won’t find the effort as troublesome. In the end, taking good care of yourself doesn’t mean you’ll have to constantly miss out on life’s joys – quite the contrary.

Pay attention to what you eat

You are what you eat and, in that respect, you really can’t expect that you won’t have any health problems if you stuff yourself with junk food all of the time. Getting overweight, cholesterol, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, etc. are just some of the issues associated with poor nutrition. The key here is to successfully break your meals into 4-5 portions a day. Also, try to include as many veggies and fruits as possible together with adequate protein sources such as meat, legumes, beans and/or fish. Also, cut down the intake of saturated fats and sweets as much as possible. This doesn’t mean you can never have a burger or ice cream, but you definitely shouldn’t have them every single day. When you eat the right foods, your body will become stronger and healthier, too. And if necessary, take vitamins and supplements as well.

Drink water and exercise

Aside from the food you eat, you also need to hydrate yourself from the inside. No other beverage can replace plain water so make sure that you drink plenty on a daily basis. If you find it difficult to drink water, you can add lemon and/or mint to spice up the flavour. Also, while you don’t have to completely cut coffee, alcohol and soda from your life, minimize the consumption of these beverages as much as possible. It’s more than enough to drink one coffee cup per day and get soda or beer/wine when you go out on the weekend.

Together with hydration, it’s crucial that you get some physical activity in your life. Moving your body makes it stronger and helps it flush out the toxins, which is also a great way to relieve stress and do your part for disease prevention. You don’t have to sweat in the gym for an hour every day but at least try to walk or otherwise work your muscles for at least 20 minutes on a daily basis.

Maintain your oral health

Did you know that your oral health is the window to your general health? If you neglect proper oral hygiene, not only can this lead to painful issues with your teeth and gums, but it can also affect the rest of your body. For instance, inflamed gums can lead to cardiovascular and pulmonary problems, worsen the condition in regards to osteoporosis, wreak havoc if you suffer from diabetes, and so on. Aside from brushing your teeth properly every morning and evening, you should definitely make it a point to visit a professional clinic such as the renowned Delight Dental Spa in Mascot on a regular basis. Having a trustworthy dentist will make a huge difference for your health and happiness.

Take care of your emotional needs

Your mental well-being is very important for maintaining good health and preventing disease. After all, if you constantly ignore what your heart wants, you’ll only accumulate the amount of stress and anxiety, which consequently affects your physical health as well. In that respect, it’s crucial that you find some time for yourself. Socialize with your friends and family and engage in activities and hobbies that bring happiness and satisfaction to you personally. Having some quality “me” time shouldn’t be viewed as a luxury but a necessity for proper self-care.

As you can see, taking good care of yourself in order to stay healthy and happy is not a huge and impossible effort. But, it might be a big lifestyle change for you at the moment. In case you need some advice and encouragement in this regard, don’t hesitate to seek help from professionals in the field. Talking with a therapist is not at all scary, especially since you’ll get an objective person to kindly show you the way to a better future, if you’re aware that you don’t have the strength to do it alone.
